I love garlic and I love orange zest but whenever I zest and grate my hands smell aromatic for the rest of the day and through no fault of my own I momentarily sting my eyes. Garlic is just one of those love it or hate it ingredients – it takes some effort but the rewards are scandalous to your senses.

Garlic is one of my store cupboard must-haves and honestly used in 90 per cent of my recipes, slow-cooked, one-pot wonders and crispy oven dishes. It is the ultimate starting point for a tasty overload. Today I was in one of those crispy chicken kind of moods and thought what better way to dig out my corn-fed chicken legs from the fridge and honey from the cupboard.

Well, you guessed right crispy chicken equals lazy food oven day and orange infused, honey, garlic chicken was on the menu. This recipe is fast, with no marinating time and perfect for times like today, with flavour from subtle ingredients to crisp up in the oven while you sit back and relax.


2 corn-fed chicken legs
A generous drizzle of olive oil
Zest of 1 orange
1 tablespoon of clear honey
1 garlic clove, grated/ puréed/ minced
Freshly ground salt and black pepper for seasoning


Preheat the oven to 200°C.

In a medium bowl, grate the garlic and zest the orange. Pour in a generous amount of olive oil add the honey and season.

Hand whisk vigorously and baste the skin of the chicken legs generously and cook in the oven for about 90 minutes until the skin is crispy golden and the meat is succulent.
